Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Hand” by OWALLOIL

Opening with a filtered, swirling conglomeration of drums, stacked harmonies, and counterpoint melodic lines, “Hand” by OWALLOIL eases fans into the listening experience over the course of a breathless 10 second intro. The main groove then drops, featuring relentless bass (via an arpeggiator) and a more present lead vocal.

The lead vocal line all throughout this piece is gorgeous. Passionately delivered, it dances up and down the scale effortlessly as the song builds steadily beneath it. Lacking a clear-cut pop structure, the song instead functions as a linear build, repeating sections as the instrumentation becomes increasingly more aggressive and anthemic.

Halfway through, OWALLOIL delivers a sharp left hook, introducing a key change and a subdued but equally beautiful and intriguing bridge. The song triumphantly returns to its original format and continues to build to the ultimate climax, with an epic guitar solo screaming over everything that went before. It’s incredible.
