F.T. Island: A Lasting Rock Impression

More and more, K-pop is full of electronic beats and R&B influences. F.T. Island is unique in the fact that it’s more rock-centric. This move, along with global recognition and authenticity, has popularized the band beyond simply being another K-pop boy group.

F.T. Island debuted on June 7, 2007, under FNC Entertainment. The band’s current makeup is main vocalist Lee Hong-gi, bassist Lee Jae-jin, and drummer Choi Min-hwan. Guitarist Oh Won-bin left the group in 2009 and was replaced by Song Seung-hyun, who later left the group to pursue his acting career. In 2019, leader Choi Jong-hoon also left the group and retired from the entertainment industry altogether.

F.T. Island’s decision to focus on rock music was a bold move, considering K-pop often centers more on EDM and pop sounds. The group’s debut album, Cheerful Sensibility, featured a blend of rock ballads and pop-rock songs, distinguishing them from their contemporaries. The album became the sixth best-selling album of 2007.

The group’s second album, Colorful Sensibility, and subsequent releases in Japan helped the group to gain global traction. A notable moment in this era was their performance at Japan’s 2010 Summer Sonic Festival, an amazing achievement for a Korean band, and one that was repeated by the group in the years following. The group’s MV for “Soyogi” gained a lot of popularity, with its sort of grunge feel and smooth vocals.
F.T. Island tells authentic stories through their music, connecting with their fans. “Severely” is complete with stadium rock guitar and a weighty chorus. The MV is like watching a K-drama in 6 minutes.
Although their popularity has declined in recent years, F.T. Island feels like a rock band that’s been around for longer than they have been, promising to be a classic. With their rock sound, authentic storytelling, and global recognition, the group has made a lasting impression on the K-pop world.
