FIN K.L. - The 90s K-pop Girl Group

Yesterday, we made ourselves familiar with a few male 90s K-pop idols and now it is time to meet some female idols from the same era. While the K-pop boy groups were crushes of the female populace, the girl groups were reigning over the dreams of the male populace. FIN K.L. is one of those early K-pop girl groups that captured the attention of its home country despite its short-lived activities.

Formed under DSP Media, FIN K.L was a four-member girl group consisting of Lee Hyori, Ock Joo-hyun, Lee Jin, and Sung Yu-ri. FIN K.L. debuted in May 1998 with Blue Rain. What set FIN K.L. apart was that despite the groups of its time sticking to catchy chorus and soft pop songs, FIN K.L. played to their strength with ballads and R&B tracks. While not the focus, the group also released a few catchy pop tracks to showcase their versatility.

In 1999, FIN K.L. released another album and a special “half” album. The group gained good sales for their albums and their popularity also held up. With the turn of the century, the members turned a new leaf in their book. FIN K.L.’s return showed the members in a more mature light. In 2001, FIN K.L. released another “half” album which featured remakes of popular tracks from the 80s and 90s. The following year, FIN K.L. released new music, going back to its strengths and presenting an assortment of RnB and ballads. That would prove to be the last full-group album, and the last group activity for several years.

Starting 2003, the group began their solo activities without really disbanding. The members began making appearances in dramas and musicals, thus maintaining some relevance in the public eye. This continued until 2006 when the members officially left DSP media, but the group’s disbandment was never announced.

The group reunited in 2008 for a concert performance, and then in 2019 for a variety show and a new single. But since then, there has been no news about the members coming together for any group activities. The group, despite its hiatus, continues to be favorites for those who heard them.
