Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “February” by THORNAPPLE

There are lots of beaches in South Korea, but they’re too far north to be the picturesque vacation spots the mind conjures up when you daydream of the beach. You know, the beaches of Southern California, Bali, or Hawaii. The beach season in South Korea is short, and the water is too cold to swim in except for the summer months.

“February” by THORNAPPLE is like a sad trip to the beach. Indeed, sonically, it feels like a cold February beach walk. This sprawling mashup of post rock, beach rock, and indie rock textures clocks in at over 6 minutes, but doesn’t let you catch your breath once. Twinkly guitars, aching falsetto, and punchy unison hits as the song seamlessly floats in and out of half time shifts – they’re all a testament to why THORNAPPLE is one of the best bands out of South Korea.

Just wait until they hit you with the funk guitar and math rock licks in the back half. It’ll break your heart in the danciest way.
