COLOURS by Solar: An Authentic Palette of Greatness
著者: Victoria Costner

Solar, the leader of MAMAMOO, released her second mini-album on April 30th of this year. In this EP, one experiences a variety of styles such as house, rock, R&B, folk, and blues — a diverse group of genres for one mini-album. She created a listening experience for her audience that is specially curated and gave each song the best color that describes it. “Colors” is Glam Silver, “But I” is Reborn Beige, “Empty” is Midnight Blue, “Honey Honey" is Bubblegum Pink, “Easy Peasy" is Tangerine Orange, and “Blues” is Ebony Black. In Solar’s concept photos for this album, we are able to see each color’s depiction in the outfits she wears as well as the vibe she wants her audience to perceive.

As you can see, the title of her mini album and the first track are the same words but have different meanings to Solar. In a video she posted about the mini-album, she explains “COLOURS has the meaning of respecting different people and things.” Solar also mentions that she liked this spelling more since it contains the word ‘ours’ and it brings out the meaning of respect. Solar wants to make the album more inclusive for her audience and hopes the listener will want to bring out their most authentic self.
She starts off the album with “Colors.” This track is very catchy and brings that confidence-building sound that makes you want to dance, more specifically to vogue. In her music video, Solar and her backup dancers show off their best vogue during the chorus and it is an understatement to say that they killed it with the dance. The pre-chorus of the song is a confidence booster that you’ll catch yourself repeating on a daily basis:
“Look in the mirror
And pose
So damn fine
And say it
”I’m sick, I’m hot
I’m gorgeous, so bad”
The house music vibes and the repetitiveness of the lyrics gives off the feeling of empowerment and excitement. This song is also a reminder that you should embrace your individuality and accept yourself for who you are, which is sexy no matter what. Solar definitely picked the right color, Glam Silver, to represent this song.
“But I” is a crowd favorite track. The mix of Solar’s vocals and the band bring out the emotional side of Solar. The lyrics create the image of emotional mistreatment from a loved one and how liberating it can be to step away and release that pent-up anger and frustration. “I really hate you” can be relieving to say when you come to terms with the fact that the person you loved and trusted has mistreated you. You’re able to take a step back and stand up for yourself since you know you deserve more in life. That self-liberating feeling makes you feel as if you are on top of the world. This song pushes the listener to leave the toxic parts of their life and focus on their own well-being.

"Empty" is a hauntingly beautiful track that dives deep into feelings of loneliness and longing. With its midnight blue vibe, the song captures the essence of those quiet, introspective moments when you feel most vulnerable. Solar's voice, raw and full of emotion, carries the weight of the lyrics perfectly, making you feel every bit of the emptiness she's singing about. This song is a poignant reminder of the times we all feel lost and searching for meaning, and Solar's heartfelt delivery makes it impossible not to connect with the song on a deep personal level.

Solar’s ability to convey complex emotions through her music and visuals makes this album a compelling journey for her listeners. She is very expressive with every one of her songs and made this to be a no skip album. Her songs were well written and captivated the audience. This second mini-album is a masterful showcase of her artistic versatility and emotional depth. COLOURS not only showcases Solar's growth as an artist but also invites her audience to embrace their authentic selves and find strength in their unique identities.
