LUCY - The boy band whose music will warm your heart
Oleh Nandini Iyengar

LUCY is not like your run-of-the-mill K-pop boy groups, yet they are a boy band in the truest sense of the word. Formed during the reality show Superband, LUCY borrows its name from a pet dog that stayed beside a member’s studio and it also has its roots in Latin which translates to “light”. LUCY is a four-member band formed under Mystic Story Entertainment. The members and their positions in the band are as follows: Shin Ye-chan is the leader and a violinist, Choi Sang-yeop is also a vocalist and a guitarist, Jo Won-sang is a producer and a bassist, Shin Gwang-il is another vocalist and also a drummer.

LUCY debuted in May 2020 with the single album Dear.. Since then, the group has released five EPs, one studio album, five additional single albums, and a bunch of K-drama OSTs.

Since their debut, the members have been actively participating in the creative process for each song they release. It only goes to show that the members are truly talented and immersed in creating music that comes from a place of honesty and deep understanding. Their music videos are always a visual treat because sometimes there will be an animated visual graphic story, or a short narrative episode featuring a protagonist.

The group’s latest offering is their fifth EP FROM., which was released in August 2024. The EP featured a double title track listing along with three B-sides. One of the EP’s lead singles, “Villain,” has received a fair amount of positive attention and is quite reminiscent of an anime opening theme song. Powerful guitar, emotionally charged singing and a harmonious influx of classic violin tunes make this track a banger from start to finish. Watch the music video for “Villain” here:
The songs they make lend a message of hope to their listeners, so if you’ve been looking into listening to new bands from South Korea, then you have to add LUCY to your list!
