AOA: Masters of the Public Eye
It can be really hard to keep the attention on you as a pop star even if you’ve already gotten it turned to you once. So many groups have to work like mad to avoid falling into obscurity or potentially worse, becoming a one-hit wonder. However, girl group AOA have managed to keep themselves relevant throughout their time as performers. How have they done this? Well, among other ways, AOA have found success through a unique dual concept debut, long-lasting popular music, and remaining in the public eye despite a lack of activity within the group.
The group first made themselves known through their unique debut and concept. While most groups only focus on the group (as is to be expected; what else would you focus on??) AOA instead debuted in 2012 as both a group and a band. They presented a subgroup of the group, known as AOA Black, who would play instruments and perform more like a typical rock band than a K-pop group. The concept gave AOA a cool ‘double threat’ appearance, and the idea was so successful, a second subgroup was launched years later, named AOA Cream.
The group also solidified themselves in the minds of fans by putting out some genuinely great music. Because every group nowadays seems to achieve some level or chart or iTunes success, it can be a bit more difficult to see who’s making a lasting impact on music. However, tracks like “Heart Attack” not only reached high positions on the charts when they were first released, they managed to stick around in the public consciousness for years following. It doesn’t matter how good the marketing is, if the music is great, that can make a group’s career.
Lastly, the group managed to find ways to keep the attention on them, even as they were entering into a time of instability and inactivity. For example, after several members decided to leave the group, the remaining few competed on the show Queendom, which bolstered their public image and kept the conversation about them going. Additionally, several of the departing members went on to continue working in entertainment, such as Mina’s acting career. The continued media attention also served to keep the public interested in the group, even as they were nearing the end of their time as a group.
As of 2024, there have been no official statements regarding the group’s status, though they have been inactive as AOA for several years now. Fans remain hopeful there can be more AOA in the future, but many seem to feel this is the end for the group. Whether they reunite or not, AOA has been successful at remaining in the public eye for so long already, we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear from them.
