The K-pop Queens of 2024

Few rookies have made an impact like BABYMONSTER. Despite debuting only a few months ago, their pre-debut track "Batter Up" hit 10 million Spotify streams faster than any rookie group, and "Sheesh" achieved the highest entry for a K-pop girl group on Spotify in 2024. Their debut EP, BABYMONS7ER, led to fan meetings across Asia and a pop-up store in Seoul that drew thousands of fans.

A Rookie Group with MONSTER Power

Approaching their tenth anniversary since their debut in August 2014, Red Velvet continues to shine without slowing down. With recent albums and solo projects, they aim for greater stardom. Debuting under SM Entertainment in 2014, their journey started earlier, with Seulgi joining as an SM trainee in 2007. Their success began with the hit single "Happiness," earning them Rookie of the Year awards. Since then, Red Velvet has dominated the Korean music scene with numerous top-ten hits and a global fanbase.

A Decade of Excellence

Blackpink, a powerhouse girl group, has not only dominated the music industry but also become global brand ambassadors for luxury fashion houses. Their record-breaking streams and Coachella performance highlight their immense popularity. K-pop's appeal to Western luxury brands lies in the idols' striking visuals, unique fashion sense, and growing popularity in the West. Luxury brands seek captivating and fashionable artists to represent their brand globally, expanding their reach to new demographics.

ODD EYE CIRCLE (LOONA) was a subgroup of LOONA. After legal issues, some members formed ARTMS, with ODD EYE CIRCLE (ARTMS) as a subgroup. LOONA's future is uncertain, but they haven't officially disbanded.

A New Era

TAEYEON, from Girls’ Generation, is a K-pop legend with a stellar solo career. Renowned for her vocals and global influence, she has little to prove but continues to push artistic boundaries.

Does To. X by TAEYEON measure up?

While Red Velvet isn’t my favorite girl group ever, I do think they might be the best. Their appeal is so universal, and ReVeluv has been one of the best fan groups to interact with online. Additionally, their 2017 album Perfect Velvet is, in my opinion, the best K-pop album released so far. Period. A massive number of awards and recognitions also agree the group is great, so this all might be my most room-temperature K-pop take ever.

Red Velvet Just Might Be The Best

(G)I-DLE consistently releases music yearly, with their second album, "2," dropping in January 2024. While it retains their quirky fusion style, I believe it's not their best work.

(G)I-DLE's New Record is a Little 2 Underwhelming

I was intrigued by LUCY, a supergroup from the 2019 show Superband. They've been making waves with their music, featured in multiple K-dramas and climbing Korean pop charts. LUCY is excellent, and mainstream success seems imminent.

LUCY: The Sound of Fifth Generation K-pop
