SuperM: “The Avengers of K-pop”

SuperM, formed in 2019, is a K-pop supergroup created by SM Entertainment and Capitol Music Group, featuring members from well-established groups like SHINee, EXO, NCT, and WayV. With Taemin from SHINee, Baekhyun and Kai from EXO, Taeyong and Mark from NCT, and Ten and Lucas from WayV, the group brought together some of the biggest names in K-pop. They debuted with their self-titled EP SuperM, which made history by becoming the first debut album by an Asian artist to top the US Billboard 200. Their lead single, “Jopping,” was widely praised, making it onto Billboard’s list of the "25 Best K-pop Songs" of 2019.

SuperM was dubbed the "Avengers of K-pop" due to the established careers of its members. The group was designed to combine the members’ individual strengths in performance, vocals, and rap into a single powerhouse unit. Initially, the group faced mixed reactions from fans, with some expressing concerns over its formation, fearing it could distract from the members' original groups and solo endeavors. However, the group’s success, especially in the U.S., demonstrated its potential to introduce K-pop to a broader global audience. Their unique structure, where members maintained their commitments to their original groups while collaborating in SuperM, drew comparisons to the Marvel superheroes' teamwork.

After their debut, SuperM embarked on the "We Are the Future Live" tour, which included performances in North America, Europe, and Latin America. Despite the pandemic halting some of their plans, the group adapted by joining global online events, such as the One World: Together at Home concert series, and holding a groundbreaking virtual concert that attracted 75,000 live viewers. Their efforts demonstrated their ability to keep fans engaged despite challenging circumstances, and their album Super One debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.

In addition to their music, SuperM became known for high-profile endorsements, such as becoming global ambassadors for Korean Air and starring in the airline's safety video alongside BoA. They also collaborated with Prudential on the "We DO Well Together" campaign, encouraging healthy living and positivity, further solidifying their role as cultural icons.

While the group was poised for a comeback last year, issues have arisen that have since put the group’s future into question. Between controversies, military enlistment, contract disputes, and activity with the original groups, fans are unsure when or if we’ll get to see SuperM together again. Given the quality of talent and skill in the group, it seems likely they’d be able to work something out, but only time will tell.
