Secret: Class and Charisma

The K-pop industry Secret distinguished themselves within the K-pop industry first with their girl-next-door charm, then building into a more sexy and confident side. The group quickly became well known because of their music, performance, and charisma.

Secret debuted on October 13, 2009, under TS Entertainment. The group had four members: Hyosung, Hana (formerly known as Zinger), Jieun, and Sunhwa. Before being part of Secret, Hyosung was part of a project group called Five Girls that never debuted.

Although Secret was originally formed with the intention of being an R&B and hip-hop group, the girl group tends more towards a retro sound, making it their own along the way. Their breakout singles “Magic” and “Madonna” defined them as “queens of retro,” with a fresh take on old sounds. “Madonna” features horns, an explosive chorus, and a lot of energy.
Secret’s discography is full of impressive performances. Their live stages were known for precision and sexiness—often highlighted as some of the best among girl groups of the time. Their performance of “Shy Boy” has long since been a fan favorite, with it’s fun choreography and nostalgic vibe in a diner.
Although very charismatic and powerful on stage, the group has a softer side. Songs like “Starlight Moonlight” display a sweeter, more sentimental side of Secret, showing off a different dimension of their artistry. The girl group truly balanced authentic sweetness with confident charisma. Secret’s blend of classic charm, performance style, and relatable retro tunes is likely what made them such a hit back in the day.

In 2016, Sunhwa left the group after not renewing her contract. In 2018, Hyosung and Jieun were involved in legal disputes with TS Entertainment and left the group as well. It’s a shame the legal disputes led to such a drastic change within the group. Despite no longer releasing new music, some of the singers continued activities on their own. Hyosung is a host on an entertainment show, Hana joined King of Masked Singer, and Sunhwa and Jieun now focuses more on acting. Wherever they go next in life, Secret’s members are sure to shine with class and charisma.
