Lovelyz: Lovely Girls with Angelic Voices
Por Nandini Iyengar

The world of K-pop has given us memorable groups and memorable music with each new debut. Whether the group’s journey is cut short or long-lived depends on several factors, one of them being renewal of contracts with the company. Groups or the members deciding not to renew their contracts tends to make way for the group to disband eventually.
One of such groups is Lovelyz. This eight-member K-pop girl group debuted under the label Woollim Entertainment in November 2014. Baby Soul, Jiae, Jisoo, Mijoo, Kei, Jin, Sujeong and Yein formed the eight members of the group. Lovelyz was also Woollim’s first girl group ever. Woollim is home to groups like Rocket Punch, Golden Child, Drippin’, to name a few.

Lovelyz debuted with a studio album named Girls’ Invasion and went on to release several EPs, single albums and live albums as well. The girls charmed their fans with a fantastic concert series as well. Their fans are lovingly called Lovelinus.

Over the span of its active years, Lovelyz released music within the RnB, dance pop, and ballad genres. The girls’ music highlighted their vocal versatility, giving them space to grow with each new comeback. Lovelyz was also a part of the reality show Queendom back in 2019. Over the years, the group made their presence felt in the industry. Being Woollim’s first ever girl group, there were sure a lot of expectations on the members’ shoulders.

In November 2021, all the members except Baby Soul decided to not renew their contract with Woollim Entertainment. Baby Soul later clarified that despite the members’ departure from the company, they plan to continue their activities as Lovelyz in the near future. Baby Soul aka Lee Su Jeong eventually resigned from the company. The group is currently on indefinite hiatus and the members are pursuing their solo careers. But keeping the promise, Lovelyz is now gearing up to hold their 10th debut anniversary Lovelyz in Winterland 4 in Macau in November 2024.
