The record pulls on the heartstrings of childhood memories, self-worth, and processing emotional healing. Through powerful harmonies, incredible instrumentals, and intelligent lyricism, Heal succeeds at creating a space for listeners to relate and heal for themselves, all while reigniting the alternative rock genre in the K-Pop industry. The aim of this series is to provide a thoughtful, track-by-track analysis of an incredible album.
“Definition of ugly is”
Based on the classic tale, The Ugly Duckling, “Definition of ugly is” explores the emotional journey that is growing into oneself. The soulful sound of lead vocalist Woosung encourages the listener to become comfortable with their insecurities and even recognize insecurities as beautiful traits. Through stunning instrumentation, emotional lyricism, and impressive harmonies, the song evolves from an emotional self-reflection and recognition of shortcomings to a freeing recognition of individual uniqueness. A wild instrumental outro of electric guitar signifies the free feeling of self-love. But a closing empty chord indicates that the journey is not over yet.
