f(x): Down, but Not Out

f(x), the trailblazing South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2009, has carved out an indelible mark on the K-pop landscape. Comprising Victoria, Amber, Luna, Krystal, and Sulli, the group debuted with the single "La Cha Ta" and swiftly followed up with the successful release of their debut album, Pinocchio, in 2011. Their second studio album, Pink Tape (2013), wasn't just a commercial hit but a critical darling, earning spots on several year-end best-of lists and solidifying f(x) as avant-garde innovators within K-pop. Subsequent albums, Red Light (2014) and 4 Walls (2015), continued their streak of success, despite Sulli's departure in 2015.

Pink Tape stands out as a landmark album, being the only K-pop album to feature on Fuse's "41 Best Albums of 2013" and Billboard's "Greatest K-pop Album of the 2010s." f(x) became known for their eclectic sound and willingness to experiment with different musical styles. Their third and fourth albums, Red Light and 4 Walls, also garnered critical and commercial acclaim, further proving their ability to evolve and stay relevant in the dynamic K-pop scene. These releases firmly established their reputation as one of the most innovative and influential K-pop groups.

In 2016, f(x) released the single "All Mine" before halting group promotions as the members pursued individual careers. Victoria rose to prominence as an actress and solo artist in China, Amber launched her solo music career in the United States, Luna continued her musical endeavors in South Korea, and Krystal transitioned into acting. Despite their individual activities, the group reunited in 2019 for the SM Town Live 2019 concert in Tokyo as a three-piece, without Victoria. Tragically, former member Sulli, who left the group in 2015 to focus on her acting career, passed away in 2019. Her death highlighted the mental health challenges faced by K-pop idols.

Post-2019, the members have continued to focus on their solo careers. Amber released her first EP, X, in 2020 and became a mentor on the Chinese version of Produce 101. Luna established her own entertainment agency, Grida Entertainment, and released new music. Krystal signed with H& Entertainment in 2020 and pursued acting, while Victoria remained active in China as a solo artist and actress. They have emphasized that despite their individual pursuits, the group has not officially disbanded.

Despite the group's hiatus and the members' solo projects, f(x)'s legacy remains influential in the K-pop industry. They are celebrated for their innovative music, groundbreaking performances, and the individual successes of its members, maintaining a dedicated fanbase and leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
