Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Loved, hoped, lost” by GYE0M

A South Korean indie singer-songwriter who has been releasing music for the better part of 4 years. He debuted in 2020 with “Afterimage,” and has had a steady stream of releases since then, impacting audiences with his subdued, lofi production and the ethereal, whisper-like quality of his tenor vocals.
“Loved, hoped, lost” is the quintessential GYE0M track in our opinion. The second track from his 2023 LP Blue metaphor, it’s a sledgehammer to the feels. The clean, warm electric guitar is played in lullaby fashion, showing GYE0M’s intimate understanding of tone and restraint. The drums are wonderfully muted without losing their punch. And the e-piano swirls and swells around the sonic space.
Throughout it all, though, GYE0M himself remains at the center. His heart wrenchingly sweet vocals are the calm eye in a raging storm of sadness. He’s a truly remarkable talent.
