Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Echo (feat. JUKEJAE)” by Choi Yu Ree

Genres within the blanket umbrella “Korean Indie” are way more diverse than you could even imagine. We’ve covered everything from grindcore and indie folk to bossa nova and hip hop. Today’s indie pick, however, is far more relaxed and somber. “Echo” comes courtesy of Choi Yu Ree and JUKEJAE and features ethereal vocals that float passionately over a lilting, romantic piano accompaniment.

The song glides along peacefully, building tension until JUKEJAE enters, and then the song swells and kicks things up a notch. The harmonies between JUKEJAE and Choi Yu Ree are so lush that they border on vocal jazz. It’s schmaltzy, cinematic, and deeply riveting. If you’re in the mood for something well-orchestrated, peaceful, and timeless, give this a spin.
