Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “BADA” by YOU Sieun

The opening of “BADA” by YOU Sieun feels like an 80s song, but if all of the tones were wrong and the arrangement was flipped on its head. All that is to say that this song feels at once nostalgic and familiar while still being entirely its own thing. It has a laid back, carefree groove that’s pleasant enough on its own. Honestly, you could listen to the instrumental on repeat and be satisfied. The fact that the song ends on a fadeout is a testament to the instrumental’s infectious nature. Good thing she released the instrumental alongside the single!

 

It should be noted, though, that YOU Sieun delivers a stellar vocal performance here. She has personality, swagger, and presence, with a full-bodied voice that has just the right amount of drive to it. The verses are sugary sweet, but the chorus really shows off the scope and scale of her voice. If you’ve never heard YOU Sieun before, “BADA” makes a great case for why you should become a fan.
